Two days later: First sprouts

Just two days after I planted my first seeds of the season, there was serious sprouting action. I planted an assortment of tomatoes, bell peppers, artichokes, and a bouquet of flower varieties. My Propagate Pro heat mat was surely one of the factors in the speedy germination. The heat helps most seeds germinate, though I have heard that some crops like spinach don’t mind cold soil.

My first seeds begin to sprout, in March 2023.

Today being a warmish Sunday, I let the little guys hang out on the deck for a bit to get some sun and fresh air. Sun is important, but be careful with new seedlings as their leaves can get scorched easily by powerful solar rays. I usually start seedlings off for 1-3 hours in the sun. A breeze is also helpful to strengthen seedlings’ little stems. I have a small fan on its low setting about 3ft from the seed tray.

I plant a garden every year and cannot express the joy of seeing the first plants coming up. It never gets old. Few things are more therapeutic than growing, sharing, and eating from your home or community garden.

What are you planting this year?
