Best places to find good seeds

Over the years, we find ourselves buying fewer seeds. Because we’re planting less? Nah. We plant more every year, but instead of buying tons of seeds, we save as many as we can from our plants and from produce we buy. By last Thanksgiving, our overgrown basil plants were dead and crispy. A stiff grab of the dead flower stems released hundreds of perfect Genovese Basil seeds. We ended up gathering over 500 basil seeds for this year’s garden and plenty to give away to community garden members at the Ellicott City Seventh-day Adventist Church. The best place to get your seeds is your own garden or a friend or neighbor’s garden, but you still need to buy seeds (and we will be buying some, too), we have some favorite suppliers.

My advice is to go to the store and buy your seeds. The seeds you can find easily at Walmart, Lowe’s, or Home Depot are often quite a bit cheaper than what you’ll see on the very same seed companies’ websites, plus you won’t pay for shipping. Who pays $3.95 for a single pack of seeds, plus shipping? It makes no sense.
